ABSTRACT
The missionaries as a body were well educated, dedicated, and hard-working. They developed linguistic skills as tools of their trade. To be able to preach the Gospel to the man on the street, they learnt vernacular languages and prepared grammar and bilingual dictionaries. With a view to discussing Hindu sacred texts with the Brahmins they learnt Sanskrit. This chapter provides a history of the role of the missionaries in the expansion of English education in India.
