ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the making of borders/boundaries and defines the term refugee in the regional context. This chapter scrutinises their journey from border slips and migration certificates to citizenship. It aims to locate diverse layers of complexities that emerged out of Partition when the chief focus is the transformation of the identities of the Bengali refugees. The journey of the political parties and ambitions of the leaders left the refugees on the edge. They were born out of the twist and turns of political events, social unrest, economic crises and religious obscurity. The role of the state was crucial in their case, as the design of the geographical divide led to human catastrophe, and the refugees were the worst sufferers. There were several trial-and-error methods experimented with, and states failed to define their specific roles in dealing with the refugee issues.
