ABSTRACT
This chapter tries to understand the diversification of refugee political movements in Assam and Tripura. In both the states, the Bengali refugees had to put them in front of the domiciles, when Assam experienced agitations over linguistic identity and in Tripura, the crisis revolved around their sheer cultural imposition over original tribal inhabitants. This chapter seeks to explore the root causes of refugee agitations, the nature of their movement, strategies and change in forms of leadership in these particular geographical areas. The chapter attempts to find out how the refugee population itself became a decisive factor in determining the fate of the political parties on account of their huge numbers. Their position was crucial in the vote-bank politics, as they became a political force even at the national level.
