ABSTRACT

This chapter traces defining moments of history from the ideation through to the creation of Pakistan. It uncovers how ab indivisible trinity comprising culture, economics, and politics, with culture at the apex, led to war of secession. The lack of democracy and development during the first two decades post-partition frustrated the East Bengalis. This was worsened when, even after winning the general election of December 1970, the Mujibur Rahman-led Awami League was not allowed to form the government. Bengalis rose to revolt when brutal military force was brought upon them to quell the uprising and fought a civil war for eight months. On 16 December 1971, the war culminated with the liberation of Bangladesh after India’s humanitarian intervention and blitzkrieg military operation.
