ABSTRACT

This chapter offers concluding comments based on previous discussions and highlights uniqueness of this war. 1971 was a year of national and international crisis in South Asia. India intervened on humanitarian consideration to save Bengalis from further genocide and mass rape and to ensure return of refugees. Biggest strategic folly on the part of Pakistani leaders have been choosing war for a political solution. This chapter examines wartime leadership and inter se synergy between the political, military and diplomatic leaderships of all the stake holders. Aspects like genocide, justness in India’s intervention, POWs and termination of war have been discussed. The chapters ends with the observation “Mistakes in operations and tactics can be corrected, but political and strategic mistakes live forever.”
