ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the planning and conduct of military operations. Pakistan had the bulk of its forces deployed in western wing, tasked with defending and launching a counter offensive in the plains of Punjab and in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). In the east, Pakistan had troops worth three depleted infantry divisions holding a series of defence lines based on the fortress concept of defence. India planned all-out offensive operations in the east and launched multi-prong offensive operations with 2 Corps, 4 Corps, 33 Corps, and 101 Communication Zone. India’s Western Command was responsible for the defence of J&K, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh whereas the Southern Command, responsible for Rajasthan and Gujarat, was tasked with carrying out a limited offensive. The Indian Navy and Air Force outnumbered their Pakistani opponents. The campaign ended with the surrender of Niazi on 16 December in Dacca.
