ABSTRACT

The Mukti Bahini played an important role during the Liberation War. This chapter covers their organisation, strategy, and operational tactics. The formation of the Mukti Bahini went through various stages since the launch of Operation Searchlight and grew into a large and complex organisation with different kind of capabilities. Revolting armed forces and police personnel formed the nucleus and people from all walks of life joined. Except for a few independent groups, the majority were placed under Col. M.A.G. Osmani, who was their Commander-in-Chief. They were trained and partly equipped by India and were deployed in 11 sectors. Primarily, they followed guerrilla tactics and were a threat in being. Their saga of spirit and sacrifice is part and parcel of the history of Bangladesh.
