ABSTRACT

Facilitators and communication partners learn new strategies to support children’s communication by taking logical and natural next steps in augmentative and assistive communication for supporting participation, teaching literacy, celebrating successes, and fostering multiple purposes of communication. Take a look at some important social and communication skills that can be fostered in the stage of Building Fundamentals of communication. Building Fundamentals of communication for Moses means he and his parents, two siblings, and interventionists recognize the effect his communication has on others as he exchanges new information and takes turns in conversations. The richness of Moses communication strengths and preferences serve as a wonderful springboard for Building Fundamentals of communication that allow connection for communication and participation. Moses has an array of communication activities he participates in including music, familiar personal care routines, playing outside, sequences of events at home and at school, and going on car rides.
