ABSTRACT

Children achieve communication concepts through comprehension and production of phrases and sentences using multimodal means including nonverbal communication through their bodies, vocal and verbal communication, aided by communication boards, and speech generating devices. Families whose daughters were diagnosed with Rett syndrome told Alexa’s parents that music therapy enhanced their daughter’s learning, so they asked school administrators to integrate music at school and in her community program. Alexa’s parents appreciate the educational aides who know how to be good facilitators and communication partners with Alexa. The important thing is to recognize those great questions and foster question forms expressed using communication boards and speech generating devices. Remember that the purposes of communication help us create a framework, an architectural structure, for a complete communication plan. Vocabulary expands beyond nouns and verbs to include articles, prepositions, and adjectives as well as phrases for all purposes of communication.
