ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, Introduction, explains how the field of English for Research Publication Purposes (ERPP) has developed in response to the rise of English as the global lingua franca of scientific research and publication and the need of international researchers to publish in English. The term English for Research Publication Purposes and its ERPP acronym were first used in a special edition of a journal in 2008. ERPP is now an established field of study, but to date there is no single volume that gathers work in ERPP together and tries to make sense of it in an all-embracing and coherent manner. This is the purpose of this book. The chapter elaborates on the scope of the field of ERPP and provides a preview of the individual chapters of the book.
