ABSTRACT

John Locke took his B.A. in.1656 and his M.A. in 1658. He was immediately elected to a Senior Studentship at Christ Church; in 1660 he was appointed Lecturer in Greek, and in 1662 Lecturer on Rhetoric. When Locke went up to Oxford, the Dean of Christ Church was John Owen, a liberal-minded believer in toleration. In 1660 Locke was prepared to welcome the restoration of the Established Church; in this attitude he was no doubt influenced by the fact that most of his friends had royalist sympathies. Locke probably found Lady Masham a much more interesting and intelligent friend than her good-natured but rather boring husband, Sir Francis. From 1700 onwards Locke was afflicted by other ailments besides asthma. These included a painful swelling of the legs, and from 1700 till 1703 deafness.
