ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to introduce students to some theories about adult learning and techniques for successful learning. These will help them look critically at their current situation and their previous experiences of learning, including time at school. It discusses issues around learning styles (Honey and Mumford, Kolb), and Gardner’s theory of ‘multiple intelligences’. Students are encouraged to build on previous experiences of education by using a ‘fishbone’ analysis, and examining motivation for further study, and gives hints on how to maintain morale throughout the course. It also explores the relevance of Berne’s ideas of transactional analysis.
