ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify ways to help students to find, record and retrieve the relevant information available; a fundamental part of studying for any higher-level qualification. It starts by looking at what might be available in the Learning Resources Centre (LRC), including how books are arranged in the library catalogues according to the Dewey Decimal System. It gives advice on using journals and newspapers and explains ISSN numbers. It then considers how to read more effectively, and introduces techniques for scanning and skim reading, and reading reflectively and critically. The chapter concludes with advice on making notes including mind mapping and some tips on taking notes in lectures, and how to keep notes accessible and safe.
