ABSTRACT

In this chapter students are introduced to simple research methods to prepare them for their first dissertation. There is an explanation of the role of research and then the chapter takes them through the stages of preparation including identifying the area for research, developing research questions or a hypothesis, reviewing the literature and identifying the research methods. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods of collecting qualitative or quantitative data are examined together with a clear explanation of the ways in which ethical issues underpinning the proposed research must be explored. Students are then guided through approaches to analysing and presenting their findings. The chapter is illustrated with explanatory examples to aid clarification.
