ABSTRACT
This chapter considers individuals who may or may not have adhered to standard gendered roles in the ancient Near East, including Mesopotamian cult functionaries, warrior goddesses, Egyptian Sobekneferu and Hatshepsut, the legal practice of turning daughters into sons, and ambiguous iconography from Cyprus and Syria.
