ABSTRACT

Port efficiency is a multi-dimensional concept that refers to operational performance, particularly the maximization of the produced output or the production of a given output with limited possible resources. It has expanded to include additional dimensions of port performance. The efficiency of a port is part of a continuum that includes maritime, terminal, and hinterland operations. Ports measure performance to monitor their activities, check their efficiency, compare present with past performance, and compare current with targeted performance. The questions that each port managing entity and terminal operator has to answer are what to measure, how to measure, and how to use this measurement. The levels of market capture are fundamental port performance indicators. The connectivity performance of a port relates to its capacity to integrate within maritime supply chains and the operational function of a port as a node in transport networks. The environmental performance of any port is a crucial dimension of its overall performance.
