ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the main conceptual, policy and regulatory issues associated with digital democracy, the network society and the social media and established socio-political and technological methods to tackle disinformation and fake news. It outlines the withstand disinformation and fake news by means of a regional analysis. In addition, the book featured two case studies: Russia and digital disinformation; and Ukraine and digital democracy. In this sense, it contributes to the burgeoning literature on fake news and post-truth politics, disinformation, social media, democracy and the public sphere. The Orange Revolution became the facilitating factor that brought Yushchenko to power in Ukraine in 2004. It was his revolution, the revolution of the orange coalition. Yet ultimately, the Yushchenko era was marred with corruption and stagnation. President Poroshenko received international criticism for the ban, primarily because it restricted freedom of speech and access to information for Ukrainians.
