ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the origins of the social construct race and the development of racism. The chapter also introduces readers to the nature of racial disparities in criminal justice. The foundations of theory are also reviewed. The chapter closes with a discussion of the ancient Biblical connections of race and deviance.
