ABSTRACT
This concluding chapter retracesthe lessons of the preceding pages. For outstanding writers, brevity is not a limitation, but rather an aesthetic constraint that acts in masterpieces as an incentive. In short masterpieces, brevity encourages devices that impose economy in a plethora of applications. It becomes the short story’s greatest glory when writers manipulate levels of language, technique, and form, thus exploiting private and cultural symbolism with frames, cycles, and other genres. In the process, they encourage the reader to complete or, actually, to create an implied conclusion that extends, expands, and delves deeper into the meanings of short stories.
