ABSTRACT

Connecting things requires a sense of where one ends and the other begins, and Lacan uses the notion of a Mobius strip to illustrate the interconnectivity of what happens inside and what happens outside. At a very early age, we learn to be both in our internal world as well as in an external one. The horse has to be able to habit our internal as well as our external worlds. The horse masterfully demonstrated how to connect with others with strength, warmth and compassion whilst maintaining his own healthy boundaries and personal safety. Many discuss the behaviours in terms of the powerlessness they have over alcohol, and how connecting with the horses helps their understanding of the treatment and the barriers. A further level of connection, as in prison, is with the memories of horses. As a result of interacting with the horses and with each other, patients experience the importance of communications, of telling others their thoughts.
