ABSTRACT
The Arab horse is famous throughout the world and is closely associated with the history of Riyadh as the breed was first developed almost 3,500 years ago by nomadic tribes of the Najd Plateau. Receiving horses from a king is, other than exceedingly generous, incredibly symbolic. Of the markings on a horse’s face, a star was considered the most lucky, followed by a stripe or blaze that reached down to the lip, which meant his master would always have milk. An old-school American cowboy, we spent a brief but intense five days in Chicago working with a herd of horses at an Eagala advanced training seminar. Edward MacDowell and Tom Nixon, ably assisted by a team of staff and volunteers, keep our herd of horses content – a healthy, happy, working herd, without whom none of this would be possible, and from whom wisdom is just there for the taking.
