ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the therapeutic relationship is highlighted as the primary modality for trauma work and as a unique relationship between client and clinician that is often highly complex and informed by layers of interpersonal histories. Trauma clinicians contribute to an effective therapeutic alliance through a variety of facilitative dispositions and skills, which are discussed, and the role of attachment in trauma work is explored. Lastly, methods for navigating the interpersonal dynamics of the therapeutic relationship are considered. Case examples are presented to illustrate the concepts, and the chapter concludes with a keyword assessment, list of experiential activities, and supervisory discussion topics.
