ABSTRACT

This chapter assists students in the process of puppet making by providing commonly utilized materials, informative resources, and a list of accessories for their puppets. A discussion of therapeutic safety is appropriate when choosing and designing puppets. Puppets are successful because they create distance between the reenactment of difficult memories or experiences. Titration is required when addressing painful experiences. Children may begin processing such memories by projecting themselves onto toys or stuffed animals. Most of the materials used in making puppets are commonly found in any household. Discarded items can be recycled with some imagination. A multitude of resources are available to learn about puppet making. Of course, the Internet is the most widely used; sites such as eBay and Amazon have numerous homemade puppet ideas and puppets for sale. Puppet props and costumes make puppet play more enticing and fun and can strengthen the bond between a child and the puppets.
