ABSTRACT

Puppet-assisted play therapy and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are complementary. EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that processes traumatic memory to reset the brain. A memory network represents an associated system of information. Traumatic experiences are held in this memory system in the form of thoughts, feelings, and sensations. Puppet-assisted play therapy (PAPT) is an engaging, playful, and healing way to complement EMDR while addressing these memory systems. Puppets are an excellent medium to learn about the child’s story. Children sometimes want to hide in order to feel safe, and hiding behind the puppet stage with their favorite puppets may enable the child to better disclose and process. Therapists need to be cognizant of correct timing when revisiting traumatic memories. Expertise is needed to understand and address their window of tolerance, as well as their ability to remain in dual awareness.
