ABSTRACT

All of the information in the world is only as valuable as the creative use of that information. Creativity is a paramount foundation for positive mental health. One major component of improving children’s mental health that is missing from today’s society is the promotion of creativity. Creativity is crucial for healthy child development; however, it is severely undervalued, and some mental health professionals do not believe that it can be enhanced. Media sources such as television, movies, and computers can all diminish creativity. Media also emphasizes a particular standard as “correct.” When youth are influenced by peer pressure to conform, their creativity is further constrained. Social messages also advocate the seriousness of being “in style” or following trends. Nonconformance is often interpreted as silliness, which may be perceived as eccentricity or abnormality. Researchers have provided empirical evidence suggesting that creativity can be enhanced through practice.
