ABSTRACT
Research involving humans requires their cooperation, respect, ethical treatment, and voluntary participation. The aim of this chapter is to make sure that administrators adhere to the tenets of the Belmont Report, discussed in this chapter, which include respect, benevolence, and justice. The selection of subjects should be unbiased and take into account who will benefit from the study. There also needs to be transparency in the process so subjects understand risk, eligibility for the benefits of their participation, and what will be done with the information collected, especially confidential information obtained in the course of the research project. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) require universities receiving federal funds to support training in the conduct of research.
