ABSTRACT

This chapter presents seven cases of interstitial spaces taken from Santiago de Chile. The chapter starts by providing some contextual information of Santiago de Chile to then describe the production of interstitial spaces as part of the sprawling geography of Santiago. These seven cases represent the diverse nature of interstitiality, its origins, scale, and relationality. As such, they illustrate the spatial, functional, and infrastructural character of interstices and their meanings regarding planning opportunities for further suburbanisation. These selected interstitial spaces speak about the significance of the non-urban geographies of cities in contexts of urban sprawl that reaches regional scales.
