ABSTRACT
Jahangir’s ideas are those of a historian and a keen observer of nature, human life and wildlife. His description of the Varna system, evoked in Hindu society, reveals his understanding of the social significance of the four divisions and their functions.
In another instance, his account of the country of Kashmir, with its discerning details concerning the area, land and people, with their sartorial customs and the cultivation of their food culture, commerce, arts and crafts and so on, demonstrates Jahangir’s wisdom and his full grasp of the historical method of writing.
Not only this, his telling of anecdotes, while also conveying his lucid and frank communication, is also highly expressive and heartfelt. His account of a dangerous tiger hunt, full of excitement and charged with thrills, is told as an action-filled, life-or-death encounter that leaves a lasting impression.
The lively style of Jahangir’s writing takes us into the past, putting us on the spot as if we were one of the participants. His reader-friendly descriptions are filled with novel experiences of day-to-day life, which make the Jahangirnama one of the most sensational books of knowledge. The rendering of the subject matter in a natural and unaffected way conveys Jahangir’s innate creative skill.
