ABSTRACT

Justice Akbar Mawatha in Colombo 2 is part of a region in Colombo which is still referred to by its Dutch colonial name, Slave Island. The road occupies a central location and today stands as an important representation of history with a juxtaposition of the old and the new. New constructions stand tall with older ones, representing a mix of Malay, Sri Lankan and Indian architecture, including colonial examples like the large Cave building, famous for coffee trade, along with the Kompannavidiya Railway Station (Slave Island Railway Station), which stands at one end of the road.
