ABSTRACT

The period of the last quarter of the 19th century saw the gradual evolution of an era of historical transformation as technological advancements started to introduce a new concept within the realm of global trade: the ice market and the manufacturing of commercial ice for general consumption. The British colonies of South Asia had an important role to play during this time, including Sri Lanka. The ice manufacturing market in British colonial Sri Lanka during the last quarter of the 19th century made a mark on the history of South Asia, making it the first manufacturer of commercial ice in the region through the company Elephant House, which remains a favourite.
