ABSTRACT

The story of masked dance forms weaves an intricate set of reflections which connects the regions of South Asia, and the beginning of this story can be traced back to a little over a thousand years ago. The various travels of people across the region for economic, political and religious reasons prepared the platform to create a milieu of acculturation. Thus, some of the most prominent stories from folklore and oral traditions of the region of South Asia can be seen to echo in different formats across the region in the form of performing arts, especially the stories of the famous Indian epic The Ramayana. The masked dance forms of South Asia form an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of the region.
