ABSTRACT

The conclusion brings together many of the central themes of the book and highlights areas of study which can be explored further. It dwells on the recent political and social developments especially the declining electoral fortunes of the Congress and the impact of politics on 1970s and 1980s on Congress politics today. It tackles questions of caste, language, religious nationalism and Hindu nationalism which have become a compelling force today in electoral outcomes. Discussing the Citizenship Amendment Bill and the National Register of Citizens and the ongoing debate about Muslim politics and citizenship, it highlights the fact that partition and independence were significant events in the history of India and their overbearing legacy is something that needs to be studied in detail.
