ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how children and young people express and develop their musicality via various forms of musical self-expression and engagement. Specifically, through listening, singing and interacting but also by playing musical instruments, composing and inventing musical notation, improvising and through movement in play and dance. Musical self-expression via these multifaceted ways is considered from a musical development perspective in order to explain manifestations of musical development and provide a basis through which teachers can rationalise their planning and music teaching decisions.
