ABSTRACT

Despite the many difficulties which may stand in the way of success in this genre, the principal advantage for the writer of fantasy is that it engenders an extraordinarily enhanced perception of the nature of the primary world. The writing of fantasy has provided the most satisfactory mode of expressing their ideas about the contemporary world and contemporary values. Writers of fantasy are, like all other writers, engaged in literary expression of their ideas, and are thus part of the great and continuing tradition of English literature. Even when traditional material is used in modern fantasy, it may be transformed in the process. All serious fantasy is deeply rooted in human experience and is relevant to human living. Through fantasy, man does indeed enter the Perilous Realm, and may find there both the familiar made strange, and the strange made familiar.
