ABSTRACT

Lessons about the processes for the complete integration of providing for energy services with other local needs, working with natural systems and of neighbourhood design will be as gold dust for the next generation of shaping neighbourhoods. This chapter provides a tour of the key issues and measures that can be taken addressing all aspects of the neighbourhood water cycle, including rainfall and flooding, efficient use of treated water, dealing with sewage. The use of horticulture and gardening to promote health, wellbeing and social inclusion, particularly working with vulnerable people has been termed 'social and therapeutic horticulture'. Experience shows that there is scope to widen the social benefits through training schemes or, for example, working with adults with learning difficulties. Built environments must be planned so that green and blue infrastructure operates in collaboration with nature, allowing sufficient space for natural systems to continue providing crucial goods and services like fresh water, food, fuel and flood and waste amelioration.
