ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the ‘Tribal Communities in the Colonial Punjab’. It discusses the Criminal Tribes Act besides the ‘criminal’ tribes and their modus operandi. These people were interned in the special settlements for correctional behaviour and for teaching them occupational skills. The children’s education is discussed under a separate sub-head followed by the role of police and their relation with the tribal people. The role of the police in the colonial and the post-colonial times is discussed in detail. The last section deals with the issue of ‘appearance and morality’, as the tribal people are perceived to have different appearance and no morality.
