ABSTRACT

All well designed curricula reflect three strands that must work together: the intended curriculum, the enacted curriculum, and the assessed curriculum. The intended curriculum contains the learning goals for students and what the faculty use to build their unit and lesson plans. Once teachers have a solid understanding of the school’s intended curriculum, they are equipped to design the enacted curriculum. School leaders consistently underestimate the amount of time and preparation needed to plan an enacted curriculum. School leaders must establish how to assess the enacted curriculum. The assessed curriculum is jointly created by teachers but also often mandated by outside agencies. School leaders should encourage teachers to create shorter, more frequent formative and summative assessments that are aligned with their enacted curriculum maps.
