ABSTRACT

School discipline articulates the rules and strategies to support students in managing their behavior. It should never be punitive but rather should emphasize prevention and intervention strategies to improve behaviors. A school’s discipline code explains the standards of behavior set forth by the school. Besides articulating the rules, discipline codes should also explain the responses and consequences for misbehavior. School leadership should track the number and type of infractions that occur on campus, as well as collecting data on the discipline outcomes for different student groups. A code of conduct might deal with inclusion and diversity, as the intent of the code is to ensure all students and faculty feel safe in the school community.
