ABSTRACT

Faculty evaluation is a system by which teachers’ performance and effectiveness are reviewed and rated. Such systems commonly take into account how teachers deliver instruction in the classroom, how they contribute to the school culture and community, and their overall impact on student achievement. Many faculty evaluation systems do not effectively measure teacher quality, primarily due to a failure to establish clear standards. The bulk of teacher evaluation systems focus on a single measure: classroom observations conducted by a school administrator. Domains should correspond to the essential components of a teacher’s professional responsibilities, such as effective teaching practices, evidence of student achievement, high student engagement, and overall contributions to school culture. Supervisors should use evaluation tools to both coach and evaluate teachers.
