ABSTRACT

Goal setting is a necessary first step to successfully achieving a desired outcome. Specific goals help pinpoint what should be prioritized for increased performance. Clear goals signal multiple opportunities for course correction as strategies are executed—like ship captains repeatedly checking navigation against the North Star. Goal difficulty adds intensity and increases the amount of effort needed to achieve the goal. Public goals increase both personal accountability and the potential for success. Organizational goal setting should be closely aligned to the school’s mission and vision. Individual goal setting is also important, as it encourages conversations between employees and managers about performance evaluation.
