ABSTRACT

A robust attendance system is essential to knowing which students are chronically absent, which are most at risk, and how best to intervene to ensure they come to school. Taking daily attendance is mandatory for all schools, and tracking student attendance to identify which students are absent and creating interventions for them is crucial. Schools can also generate morning reminder calls or create a buddy system to encourage better school attendance. Incentives for good school attendance can also help boost attendance. Students who build meaningful relationships with people at school attend school more frequently. The school must partner with families of students who have attendance issues. Parents and guardians can often shed light on why the student is missing school—whether it’s due to a safety, scheduling, or physical or mental health issue.
