ABSTRACT

Induction programs prioritize high-leverage instructional practices while acclimating the new teachers to the school culture. They should carefully organize how teachers will learn the necessary systems, pedagogy, curriculum planning, management, and assessment over the year. There are three major supports that new teachers require at the beginning of their careers that will set them up for success in teaching: onboarding; mentorship and induction group. Induction should begin with an onboarding period before the start of the school year. This usually happens in late summer and may occur with the entire returning staff or be reserved for only new hires. An induction support group will allow them to explore their new teaching role; and as the year unfolds, they will have more mental space to discuss specific issues-both methodological and theoretical. Asking teachers what issues are important to them and planning sessions around those ideas will help teachers grow and develop into capable professionals.
