ABSTRACT

A one-on-one (O3) is the meeting in which a supervisor and a direct report communicate on a regular basis. To assess the direct report’s strengths and weaknesses, the supervisor must get them to openly speak about their understanding of organizational goals, engagement in their work, successes, and failures along the way. Open communication builds trust so direct reports feel comfortable sharing their work and can communicate where they need support. O3s should be regularly scheduled, either weekly or biweekly. In small schools, weekly is ideal, but biweekly may be necessary if a supervisor supports more than ten teachers. The reason to schedule the weekly is to allow for consistent, regular contact so the direct report can feel supported and a relationship can be built. Half an hour should be enough time for a consistent, weekly O3.
