ABSTRACT

All schools require a schedule to organize where classes meet and when learning occurs throughout the day. However, scheduling is more than resource allocation and operational efficiency. It is an invaluable tool for school improvement. A school leader can create an effective schedule by allocating resources efficiently, improving the school climate, and supporting instructional practices and programs. A well-designed school schedule optimizes the use of time, allowing more classes to meet during the day, as well as allowing for shared spaces to be utilized most efficiently. Leaders can organize classrooms to cut down the “passing time” students need to move between classrooms. Leaders must create a schedule that supports the academic philosophy and instructional framework of the school. A well-designed schedule can benefit the delivery of instruction in a school. Research has shown that students with disabilities retain more learned material if they are given a longer class period to grasp the subject matter.
