ABSTRACT

Teacher turnover is one of the costliest issues a school faces in any given year. Research shows that 16% of teachers leave in a given year, with higher percentages for new and English-language-learner teachers. School leaders should be strategic in how they retain teachers. For new teachers, this may mean giving them a mentor who can help guide them through the first year. Additionally, support groups with other beginning teachers are helpful so they can all share their experiences. School leaders should be strategic in how they retain teachers. One of the most important things a leader needs to do to motivate teachers and increase retention is to continuously communicate the mission and vision of the school.
