ABSTRACT

College counseling is one component to building a strong academic culture at the school. College counseling is a process that supports students in finding out their interests, where they see themselves in the future, and a means to achieving their goals. School leaders should ensure all students receive guidance from a college counselor on what courses to take and on their academic performance and, as senior year approaches, create with them a curated list of schools or certification programs, or both, to which to apply. Counselors should assist students in identifying scholarships and arranging interviews and college visits, as well as regularly meeting with students to ensure they are staying on track to complete their applications on time. Most independent high schools offer a forty- to sixty-student-to-counselor ratio.
