ABSTRACT

Effective school leaders must write impeccably, speak professionally, and be a warm and dynamic in-person presence in the school community. Writing well is arguably the most important communication skill school leaders must possess. School leaders communicate through writing on a daily basis— everything from faculty newsletters to parent correspondence to school yearbook introductions. Leaders should also practice public speaking, rehearsing and practicing their presentations out loud before delivery. Leaders must practice in-person communication. Effective listening is key to in-person communication. Leaders must listen carefully and allow the person speaking to be heard. The leader may need to take a class on public speaking or employ a coach to assist them in becoming a more proficient public speaker.
