ABSTRACT

Building upon the previous chapters, this chapter explores the introduction of three new themes. The first is how making art was/is a job for many in remote communities. The profitability of this job depended on the price people were willing to pay for their work and, in turn, the artist's ability to understand the desires of the art market. Second, I explore the controversial role of alcohol in art creation and marketing in Gunbalanya and its impact on Injalak Arts and the type of art being produced. I finish this chapter by focusing on the ways in which art was used for attaining and showing status in western Arnhem Land.
