ABSTRACT

This chapter builds upon the earlier history presented in Chapter 4. Picking up at the start of the mission-era in Gunbalanya (1925), I explore the nature of art trading, key individuals in the development of the art market, and the influence this history continues to have on artists and Injalak Arts today. The Gunbalanya CMS mission is to-date the single most important organisation in the history of the region's art industry. Its role has not been constant, and different Superintendents enforced their different attitudes to art production. The ways in which missionaries continued and altered this movement are an important aspect of this book.
