ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore two key themes that emerged from this research. The first is the idea that men and women interact differently with Injalak Arts. This builds upon the idea of Injalak as a cultural house discussed in Chapter 8. I question why men of a certain age were the primary group working within the grounds of the community art centre to produce their art and, therefore, participating most fully in the “community” of the art centre. The second theme focuses on why Injalak Arts was not a place for all artists. In particular, I explore how the cultural complexity of producing art in western Arnhem Land has influenced the promotion (or lack of promotion) of individuals instead focusing on the needs of the group.
